DEFINITION

   "Cinematographer"  is the author of the final version of the visual componet of an audiovisual work.
Is a person with technical expertise who manipulates light to transfer visual information by the use of a camera into aesthetic moving images on motion picture film or electronic recording systems.

   "The Director of Photography" is chosen by the Director for his competence and know-how. Also for his artistic sense and aptitude of creating mood and evoking emotion, by adequately combining combosition with lighting, marking out the direction, serving the script but respecting the budget.
In terms of responsibility, the “Cinematographer” or “Director of Photography” is answerable to the Director for the artistic value of the visual side of the audiovisual work and to the Producer for the technical quality of the photography in terms of its further reproduction.

AIMS

Aims of the Society are :

  • To promote the art of Cinematography in all fields.
  • To keep members abreast of technology, new equipment and ideas through meetings, seminars and demostrations
  • To give due recognition to any outstanding work performed by Greek Directors of Photography
  • To give due recognition and importance to the role of the Directors of Photography within the uprising art of Cinematography and to consider worthy their profession within the art world.
  • To protect and promote the authorship rights for Directors of Photography.
  • To provide a forum for Directors of Photography to meet with other members of the industry to discuss and exchange ideas, promote friendship and better understanding of each others industry role.
  • To accomplish any moral or material encouragement towards the vision of the founding of the
    Greek Film Academy.
  • To serve the technical and aesthetic upgrading of Motion Pictures purely and without any political,
    religious, syndicalistic, commercial,  or profit-bearing  deviations.

MEMBERSHIP :

Membership of the Society is divided into six (6) categories. Full, Cadet, Associate, Honorary, Patron, and Friends of the Society of Cinematographers.
